The Canary SpeaksSay it slowly - Tac-o-ron-te A-con-te-jo (pronounced tay-ho). Significant because??? Monje is making the wine of my moment. In a sea of potential obsessions (call me lost in the EtnaJuraSacraAosta quadrangle, otherwise known as the pursuit of the newest fermented crystalline deliciousness), this is it. This is a wine that you want to keep going back to over and over again, excavating new flavors, bright glimmers of light pitched against the dank and dark New York City back drop. Yes, this wine is as thought provoking and complex as it is delicious, a wine that enchants as it brings its obscure place of origin, Tacoronte-Acontejo, to life.

Spain Table From the native grape varieties Negramoll, Listan Negro, and Listan Blanco, the aromatics are a knockout; fresh blackberry and cracked pepper dominate, complimented by charcoal (soil?), mint, agave, eucalyptus - all kinds of crazy goodness. There is something different every time you put your nose to the glass. It is medium bodied, with chunky fruits out of the gate, but gains freshness, precision, and complexity with air. The tannins are fine yet firm and give grip. My good friend called this texturally like a blackberry with it's seeds intact. The finish is so lovely, lingering and aromatic in the mouth. A must try for the curious wine drinker. And cheers to Jose Pastor for bringing the best of what the Canary Islands have to offer. cb
P.S. This is a drink young wine. It is under artificial enclosure. Decant now for best pleasure. red | 62 in stock | $16.99 |

Savagnin... a thick skinned grape! Three Must Drink Jura WinesSeveral recent experiences have rekindled my love for and my interest in the wines of the Jura, ardor that lies dormant during the summer months when easy going Rose briefly sweeps me off my feet. First, there was a bottle of ’07 Domaine de la Tournelle Trousseau, which bore its differences from my beloved Puffeney Trousseau with such grace that I was smitten. Then, there was a taste of ’06 Ploussard from Philippe Bornard, whose wines, in their best examples, offer such irresistible softness of texture and prettiness of fruit that it’s impossible not to be taken in. Finally, there was a chance, not just to taste numerous Jura wines but to taste them at the same time as a generous handful of Fino and Manzanilla sherries, to which Jura white wines are most often compared. I found myself curious and intrigued afresh. Items Mentioned in this Article:
Misc. France Tournelle 2007 Arbois Trousseau des CorveesIt's a pleasure to have room on the shelf for this lovely Trousseau. From a very high altitude vineyard, the wine is quite pale in the glass and lighter in style than Trousseau from Puffeney or Bornard. The nose offers brambly fruit notes of raspberries and earth, also an herbal, peppery edge that sets the wine apart from other Trousseaus. The palate is all sweet, tangy berries and mineral. Enjoy the hint of cherry pit on the finish. Serve chilled. -msb red | 36 in stock | $29.99 |
Bornard 2006 Arbois Pupillin Ploussard La ChamadeThis Ploussard is "in the zone" right now, as we say. It's drinking really well. The nose has pretty, sweet berry fruit, both red and dark and the spicy cinnamon edge I've come to expect from Bornard's wines. Raised in fiberglass and aged in large, old foudres, this has more body and tannin than other Ploussards but is still very soft and silky on the palate. Make sure to decant before serving if possible. "La Chamade" refers to a quickening of the heartbeat, the pounding that occurs when a wine is especially good. -msb red | 18 in stock | $27.99 |
Montbourgeau 2005 L'Etoile Cuvee SpecialeWhat a treat to have a new vintage of Montbourgeau Cuvee Speciale in the shop. This Chardonnay is aged for several years under the protective layer of yeast called voile that keeps the wine from oxidizing while allowing it to evolve slowly in barrel. More pure and primary in character than the '01, on the nose this wine offers notes of almond with ripe orchard fruits playing a subtle supporting role. From a very good, ripe vintage, this wine is a joy to drink now but will also evolve nicely over several years. -msb white | 25 in stock | $29.99 |
Nerello Mascalese vines on Mt Etna - the source of Biondi's "Outis". Sicily in New YorkWe love Sicily – and we dream about going back to Sicily, but since we own the farm here in NYC, we can’t get there too often. Now we have another means to voyage there: Palmento – a Sicilian Wine Odyssey, by Robert Camuto, is a new book about Sicily and Sicilian wine, and it’s a fine book - well-written, deeply felt and keenly observed. Camuto has found most of the best of Sicilian wine (no easy feat given that – as in most places - there’s a good deal of very dull wine from Sicily). He understands the history of wine there and most importantly what the best possible future for Sicilian wine will be. We read the book with great pleasure; Camuto is very good on atmosphere, so aside from soaking up the wine reporting, our reading was full of happy nostalgia for some of our favorite places. To celebrate the publication of Palmento, we are having a Sicilian weekend: Friday, September 10, 5-7pm, Ciro Biondi will be here pouring his Etna Rosso and Bianco. Saturday, September 11, 4-7pm, we will have a book signing with Robert Camuto, who will be joined by Ciro Biondi, Frank Cornelissen, and Alberto Graci – an extraordinary gathering of three of the best winemakers in Sicily. Wine will be poured! Then, Dinner: After the tasting you are invited to join us at I Trulli for a feast of Sicilian wine and food. $120 per person for a multi-course meal and wine made by our visitors, including tax and tip. Space is limited; please call for reservations: 212-227-1434 Sunday, September 12, 3-6pm, Frank Cornelissen will pour his wines in the shop.

Pierre Larmandier and vines Not a Sale – Just Insane Prices for Larmandier-Bernier!Never say never, but it’s unlikely that an offer like this one will be repeated again. For years now our favorite Champagne, and a leader in natural wine production in the region, Larmandier-Bernier makes extraordinary wine. Special circumstances now make the pricing beyond very tempting – Terres de Vertus, for example, was $72 and is now $46.99; the incredible Rose was $82 and is now $64.99, etc etc. We are all taking loans in order to stock our own cellars, and we recommend you do the same! NB: some wines are here, and a couple will arrive this fall. Some skilled tasters write about Champagne, but our preferred source for real wisdom and in-depth observation is Peter Liem, who publishes his work at www.champagneguide.net. A subscription is $89 for a year; as Peter remarks this is the price – or less – of a bottle of vintage Champagne. For the casual taster or serious afficianado this is an investment that will more than repay its cost. Peter has written a great article about Larmandier-Bernier; rather than crib from the master, he has kindly given permission for us to reproduce it here:

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier NV Champagne Brut TraditionFrom www.larmandier.com: A harmonious blend of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay (80%) and Pinot Noirs from Vertus (20%) handpicked in 2007. The reserve wines coming from several previous vintages represent about one third of this cuvée. The natural alcoholic fermentation (natural yeast) and the malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in our temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats. The wines are left on their lees during the winter. The reserve wines are stored in casks and in wooden vats. The blending and the bottling are carried out in May, and the bottles are then taken down into our cellars and horizontally stacked. The second fermentation and the maturation 'on laths' quietly take place in the coolness of our cellars. All the bottles are disgorged manually 3 to 6 months before being marketed. The dosage is 4 grams per litre (this brut is also an extra-brut!).

A really unique and outstanding wine. The nose shows gingery, spicy notes, and lots of grapefruit peel; the wine is very dry, with a lovely delicate fine mousse, some creaminess on the finish, and the flavors promised by the aromas. A truly interesting and special Champagne; writing about it makes my mouth water. JW From www.larmandier.com: Made exclusively from our Côte des Blancs Chardonnays (Vertus, Cramant, Avize, Oger), mostly from the 2007 vintage. The proportion of reserve wines (coming from several previous vintages) is about 40%. The natural alcoholic fermentation (natural yeast) and the malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in our temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats. The wines are left on their lees during the winter. The reserve wines are stored in casks and in wooden vats. The wines are blended and bottled in May, after being very lightly strained. The bottles are then taken down into our cellars and horizontally stacked. The second fermentation and the maturation 'on laths' quietly take place in the coolness of our cellars. Larmandier-Bernier NV Champagne 1er Cru Terre de Vertus Blanc de BlancA great no-dosage Champagne, given an extra dimension from Larmandier's great Biodynamic work in the vineyard. Remarkably elegant and mineral on the palate, this is a wine-lover's Champagne that's far more satisfying than those more expensive brand-name tete-de-cuvees... From www.larmandier.com: No blending for this single-cru Champagne: Chardonnays only, coming from the vineyard plots of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets situated mid-slope in Vertus. One terroir only and one vintage only: 2006. The natural alcoholic fermentation (natural yeast) and the malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in our wooden big casks and our temperature-controlled vats. The wines are left on their lees during the winter. If the year merits it, this non-blended cuvée will be bottled with other terroirs and other vintages. Then the bottles are taken down into our cellars and horizontally stacked. The second fermentation and the maturation 'on laths' quietly take place in the coolness of our cellars. All the bottles are disgorged manually 3 to 6 months before being marketed. This wine is non dosé (no sugar added), in order to respect its purity from beginning to end.

Larmandier-Bernier 2005 Champagne Grand Cru Extra Brut Vieilles Vignes de CramantFrom www.larmandier.com: Our old vines in Cramant face south-east and are blessed with an exceptional terroir. They are aged between 48 and over 70 years old. Their deep root system and the diversity of the old stocks contribute to the complexity of the wine. Vinification and maturation The natural alcoholic fermentation (natural yeast) and the malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in our barrels and vats. The wines are left on their lees during the winter. This cuvée is bottled without any blend (mono-cru). Then the bottles are taken down into our cellars and horizontally stacked. The second fermentation and the maturation 'on laths' quietly take place in the coolness of our cellars. All the bottles are disgorged manually 6 months before being marketed. Lots of sweet red fruit aromas – and on the palate. Very dry, delicate, foamy; a real vin de terroir – like the Blanc de Blancs. Another remarkable wine. JW From www.larmandier.com: This technique is rarely used in Champagne: the Pinots are destemmed and left to macerate for about two days before the 'bleeding' is carried out. Then come the natural alcoholic fermentation in an enamel-lined steel vat, the malolactic fermentation and the maturation on the lees during the winter. The bottling takes place in May. After being aged in our cellars, the wine is disgorged at least 3 to 6 months before being marketed with a discreet dosage (3 grams of sugar). pink sparkling | 57 in stock | BioDynamic | $64.99 | Non-Discountable |

Pierre Frick Pierre and Chantal Frick - Delicious Biodynamic Wines from Alsace! One of the most enjoyable tastings I've had recently was with Pierre and Chantal Frick - 24 unique and delicious natural wines, nine of which have just arrived at Chambers Street. The Fricks work with each vintage according to what nature brings them, so there is a great variety from year to year - a fascinating diversity of cuvees, many of which are bottled without sulfites if conditions permit. Working organically since 1970, and certified Biodynamic since 1981, they have living soils that contribute to the health of the vines and the complexity of the wines. "The application of this more comprehensive approach to the life of the soil and vine advocated by bio-dynamie has changed our vineyard. The growing cycle of the vine is in better harmony. It is less sensitive to grey rot and insect pests. The better balance of the plant is conducive to good grape ripening and obtaining a better quality of juice (density, balance, minerality, vitality). From this the wines have revealed more depth and greater expression of terroir." The wines are hand harvested - "The social aspect of the harvest and the search for quality through successive pickings excludes the use of machine harvesters." Fermentations are with wild yeasts - "The soil and sub-soil and additionally the bloom and yeasts on the grapes constitute the terroir. For us, biodynamic viticulture and the expression of terroir require wild yeast fermentations." Aging is in old 3,000 liter casks which the Fricks prefer to stainless steel or barrique. "These casks allow breathing (airflow) and transpiration (evacuation of higher alcohols and esters) of wines, without changing their taste by the contributions of new oak." These are beautiful expressions of the terroirs of Pfaffenheim through a creative and responsible viticulture - we urge you to try a mixed case of these unique and delicious wines! Txakoli is in the House!2009 Txakolinas are here! It is a great vintage for Spain's north coast, and hooray for prices coming down a bit. A dryer and warmer vintage brought more extract, stuffing and more mineral complexity to these light, searingly crisp and excitingly ethereal wines. Ameztoi's blanco is particularly impressive. Xarmant is a tremendous value and expresses its tufa soil incredibly - very savory and petrol in character. If you have not tried these extremely singular wines from Atlantic influenced terroirs -- Now is the time! They absolutely beg for summer refreshment. And we aim to serve the thirst! Items Mentioned in this Article:
The classic Txakoli! With intensely focused lime peel, green apple and wet stone notes, this has a vivacious texture from residual CO2 and lively acidity, finishing incredibly saline and persistent. At 11% ABV, this is an excellent mid-day summertime quaffer! cb white | 45 in stock | $19.99 |

Iroulegy in Winter Bandol and FriendsWhen was the last time you drank Bandol, or Cassis Blanc… or Iroulegy for that matter? If you’re like me, until a few months ago when I received an invitation to lunch with Reynald Delille of Domaine de Terrebrune in Bandol, it may have been quite awhile, too long, perhaps. As I enjoyed Delille’s wines, the young, floral Bandol Rouge from the beautiful 2006 vintage as well as older vintages going back several decades, I wondered why Bandol wasn’t more of a staple in my home. Items Mentioned in this Article:
Terrebrune 2006 Bandol RougeMy love affair with this Domaine began at lunch with Reynald Delille. Domaine de Terrebrune lies in the far southeastern corner of Bandol, quite close to the Mediterranean, which gives a distinct iodine quality to the wines. Delille is a second generation vigneron who has done much for the domaine since he took it over from his father. He employs organic practices in the vineyard (easy to do in Provence because of the hot, arid climate) and manipulates little in the cellar. The wines see a long elevage, spending 20 months in foudre and another 18 in bottle in the cellar. This is an elegant style of Bandol, particularly in the excellent '06 vintage. The wine shows dark floral fruits, the telltale animal quality of Mourvedre, and warm soil but without the alcoholic heat or raisin-y notes that afflict many southern Rhone wines. It's a wine that can easily be enjoyed now but has great potential in the cellar. -msb red | 30 in stock | Organic | $33.99 |
Gaussen 2009 Bandol RoseJean-Pierre Gaussen is a very traditional vigneron in central Bandol. He and his wife have farmed their 12-hectare domaine without the use of pesticides and fertilizers since the '60s. They insist on hand-harvesting and are, essentially, organic but resistant to the notion of certification for promotional purposes. This is a full-bodied and animal style of Bandol Rose that has more in common with Pradeaux than with Tempier or Pibarnon. A blend of equal parts Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Grenache, the nose offers notes of licorice and mint and the finish has abundant red berry notes. -msb pink | 53 in stock | $18.99 |
Val Bruyere 2008 Cassis Cassis, not to be confused with the black currant flavored liquor, is a tiny Mediterranean appellation for white and rose wine. The white wines are blends, in this case of the following: Clairette, Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc. Who can forget Kermit Lynch's words about Cassis Blanc: "most intriguing is its combination of unctuousness and nervosity?" The wine has rich, powdery coconut notes and voluptuous ripe fruit with underlying shell-y minerality. On the palate, this wine might remind the drinker of a Rhone wine but with the brisk tang and crisp acidity imparted by breezes of the nearby Mediterranean. -msb white | 23 in stock | Organic | $19.99 |
Rhone L'Anglore 2009 Tavel RoseL'Anglore is a very special domaine in one of the best Rose appellations: Tavel. Vigneron Eric Pfifferling is a honey-maker who turned winemaker in 1988. He's passionate about biodynamism and eschews the use of all chemical treatments. He has a great love for traditional Rhone wines and began his domaine when he perceived that traditional Rhone wines were becoming extinct. This wine is a blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, and Clairette, grown on soil that is covered in galets, the flat, smooth stones found in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This wine is "natural" in the best possible sense of the word, dark and opaque with yeasty notes notes on the nose mingling with cranberry and wild strawberry. Full-bodied and a bit tannic, this wine needs time in the decanter or a day open in your refrigerator to show its best. -msb pink | 24 in stock | Natural | $23.99 |
Ilarria 2007 Irouleguy TraditionIroulegy is the southwestern most appellation in France, nestled in the green rolling hills of French Basque country where vines have been cultivated since the 11th Century. The soils here are sand and clay, rich with iron. This is a delicious blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Tannat from a great organic estate run by Peio Espil. Low yields and great vineyard work give this elegant medium-bodied wine earthy strawberry fruit and subtle hints of spice as well as black fruits from the Tannat. It benefits from decanting if drinking now and will improve for 6 to 8 years in the cellar. The wine has characteristics of Bordeaux but with a rustic edge and uncanny ability to pair well with hard sheep's milk cheese. -msb red | 4 in stock | Organic | $19.99 |
Ilarria 2009 Irouleguy RoseThis is a very full-bodied Rose from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat grown on limestone and schiste soil. The nose offers very deep berry fruits such as currant and raspberry, all of which carry through to the palate, which is both fruity and earthy. This is a serious, even tannic Rose, showing its Tannat component in its structure. -msb pink | 70 in stock | Organic | $17.99 |
Ilarria 2009 Irouleguy BlancThis wine is made from a blend of Petit Manseng and Petit Corbu, names that will sound familiar if you're a lover of Juracon. Hailing from a property that is about five miles from the Spanish border in French Basque Country, these Mansengs and Corbus are grown by a man whose first language is Basque. This wine is the real deal. On the nose, you'll get the pineapple-y raciness characteristic of Jurancon but drier, more chiseled, and more petrol-y. The aromas almost veer toward those of crunchy, green fruits and fresh cut grass. The palate, unapologetically dry, offers plenty of richness with raw honey notes and a continuation of the pineapple-y raciness found on the nose. When you experience these grape varieties, it's easy to understand why they produce such great sweet wines, but that doesn't stop me from loving the dry versions best. -msb white | 19 in stock | Organic | $26.99 |
Luis Rodriguez Amongst His Vines Ribeiro Royalty!I have sold Luis Rodriguez's “A Torna Dos Pasas” Tinto for a couple of vintages now. It seems that every buyer has a wine or two in their section that they want to stay a little quiet about – just hand sell to friends and keep it their little secret. On Super Bowl Sunday my significant other and I had a couple of our wine-geek friends (both industry professionals) over for some roast pork and accoutrements. I served the A Torna Dos Pasas blind to my two friends, curious as to what they thought it might be. The guy exclaimed "Northern Rhone!" (right soil, Granite). His accompanying lady (and CSW colleague) theorized Piedmontese terroir (I can see the Barbera connections). After some lingering and theorizing of my own, I unveiled the wine, the bottle almost empty. My guy friend, an extreme Franco-phile, immediately called it "the best Spanish wine outside of Rioja that I’ve ever tasted!" At that moment it was apparent his hyperbole was not unwarranted. I had been feeling the same all along… We may have the greatest wine-maker in Galicia on our hands! Items Mentioned in this Article:
Rodriguez, Luis 2007 Ribeiro Vina de Martin BlancoComprised primarily of Treixadura, this shows delicate aromatics of fennel seed, lemon, ripe pear and herbal notes. The palate has a luscious white Burgundy-like texture (but weighs in at a mere 12% alcohol) showing more anise, chalk, honeysuckle, and finely detailed grapefruit peel and honey'd elegance in the finish. An outstanding bottle of wine that will surely improve with time. cb white | 13 in stock | $32.99 | Non-Discountable |
Rodriguez, Luis 2008 Ribeiro A Torna Dos Pasas TintoThis old-vine cuvee of Caiño, Brancellao, and Ferrol comes from beautiful steeply terraced vineyards (see the Jose Pastor Selections website) that are a mixture of sand and granite soils. The result is a gorgeous mix of broad dark fruits, country aromas of wild flowers and herbs, complimented by tangy minerals. There is good structure here with impeccably balanced acidity and fine yet layered tannins making this, I think, age-worthy at least in the near to middle term and one of the great expressions of terruño that Spain (specifically Galicia) has to offer today. cb red | 20 in stock | $32.99 |
